SPATIAL MODEL OF KYIV SUBURBIA: HISTORICAL ASPECTS OF DEVELOPMENT AND MODERN BOUNDARIES

Background. Suburban areas of large cities have become an important component of urban settlement systems due to suburbanization processes, population migration, and numerous spatial transformations. Being administratively independent, suburban places develop in interaction with the central city and are influenced by the implementation of its General Plans and development strategies. To improve the comfort and quality of life for the population in suburbia is important to delimitate suburban boundaries, taking into account the current administrative structure and to identify their spatial characteristics.
Methods. The following methods were used: comparative method, cartographic, grouping, the method of spatial GIS analysis, and k-means clustering.
Results. The article analyzes Kyiv's General Plans from the second half of the 20th century in the context of its suburban development and the role and features of Kyiv suburbia in the city's General Plans. Two periods and seven stages of the spatial development of Kyiv and its suburban area from the second half of the 20th century to the present day are identified. A comparative analysis of different methods for delimitation the boundaries of the Kyiv suburban zone was conducted, and a spatial model of its suburbia was created. Grouping and ranking of territorial communities in the Kyiv suburban area based on population density, level of urbanization, and their distance from the city center were conducted. The degree of involvement of territorial communities in cooperation within the "Kyiv Agglomeration" association has been investigated.
Conclusions. Using GIS analysis methods, the territorial communities of the Kyiv suburban zone were clustered, and a three-zone spatial model was created, including first, second, and third-ring suburbia. Spatial features of the development of the Kyiv suburban area have been identified. The spatial model can be used in the urban planning documentation creation and the concept of integrated development of Kyiv and its suburban area argumentation.
