PHYSICAL ACCESSIBILITY OF URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE AND WAYS TO IMPROVE IT: THE CASE OF AKADEMMISTECHKО

Background. In the current context of Ukraine’s social development, the establishment of a barrier-free environment has become a priority of state policy and a crucial condition for social integration. Following the full-scale invasion in 2022, the number of people with disabilities has significantly increased, intensifying the need for an accessible urban environment. Accessibility is regarded as a cornerstone of inclusivity and sustainable development. The purpose of this study is to assess the level of physical accessibility within the Akademmistechko residential district in Kyiv and to develop recommendations for improving infrastructure for people with limited mobility.
Methods. The research employs field observations, surveys, descriptive, cartographic, and comparative analyses to evaluate the level of physical accessibility of the urban environment.
Results. The article presents the findings of the study assessing the physical accessibility of the Akademmistechko residential area in Kyiv. The analysis is based on a comprehensive assessment of urban environment elements, including sidewalks, ramps, pedestrian crossings, and public transport stops. A quantitative analysis was conducted using defined accessibility criteria, and the main problems and spatial characteristics of the area were described. The results reveal that most facilities do not meet accessibility standards, particularly in terms of tactile paving, curb ramps, and ramp design. The highest accessibility indicators were recorded along the Ring Road and Akademik Palladin Avenue. The findings emphasize the need for a systematic approach to improving urban infrastructure in accordance with the principles of universal design.
Conclusions. It has been demonstrated that the level of physical accessibility in the Akademmistechko residential district is insufficient to ensure full mobility for people with limited physical abilities. The results highlight the key spatial barriers to accessibility and outline directions for infrastructure improvement based on the principles of universal design and national standards.
